I bumped on to a videoon YouTube that has Neil deGrasse Tyson elaborating on how we share 99% identical DNA structure with the Chimpanzees. Probably most of us might have always known that we share a good percentage with those smart monkeys. The astonishing point he made is that the 1% difference is what sets us out build the genome sequencing, the Hubble's telescope, the internet, advanced mathematics etc. This implies that while the DNA difference is so small; maybe the intelligence difference isn't too large either. This means the intelligence level involved in stacking a set of boxes to grab a banana and Calculus isn't much different; a mere 1%. Curiosity and Hollywood movie overload get me thinking as to how much more intelligent aliens would be. And, what amongst our cloud platforms would they find worthy of their attention? Yeah, playing the aliens' cloud architect. Maybe we could delve into the psyche of an alien to see the merits of Google Cloud that enterprises filled with self-regarded superhumans aren't able to. Cutting-edge comp sci: Google leads the way in hyper-scale distributed computing. Everything that's a hype and trendy in today's computing is something Google has built at least a decade ago. Google has been faced with challenges in computing like no other, the datasets and its volume has been unfathomable. As a result, Google has come up with some innovations we stand on today. Consider Dremelthat can run aggregation queries over multi-terabyte datasets in seconds, or Google Spannerthat is probably single largest database on Earth or MapReduce in the year 2003. No-Ops: This might be hard to set in considering most of us are still basking in the glory of dev-ops. Oh but, we've just bridged the gap between developers and infrastructure operations, isn't that a wonderful thing? Maybe not, because what if there was no need of a bridge between the devs and the ops? or maybe what if there was no need of ops at all. That's what you've with Google App engine. You aren't writing a single line of infrastructure deployment script tweaking network or storage, you're writing code that simply ensures a superior experience for your users. That's the true definition of dev. productivity. Containers: We're in a phase where we aspire to move everything we' used to do in a virtual machine over to a container. Containers is a technology that Google helped improvise with their contributions to cgroups, and maybe forgot to standardize and name it appropriately to make neat headlines, which Docker came along and did much later. If you've spun up a Google AppEngine project, you'll see how your application is running on containers with you not even worrying about it. How you scale for millions of users starting with even a free account. Be able to query though extremely large datasets with a billion of rows in a few seconds. Share memory across your applications using Memcache; no deployment scripts however. Made for developers by developers - This is a wonderful thing and a terrible thing all the same time. Wonderful because there is no respect for tradition and allows us to move forward with our capabilities and cuts through bullshit. Terrible because; Google cloud is not popular like some others. Google never met us where we (enterprises) are instead they hoped we'd go to them getting rid our traditional VMs and networking and other boring stuff. Did I mention we also hesitated because some of our decisions were mostly like "Hey! nobody ever got fired for going to AWS". How many enterprises do developers, particularly millennial developers get to make technology decisions? In companies like SnapChat, Spotify, Niantic, the makers of Pokemon Go; and they use Google Cloud.
