Technology, Sovereignty, and the New Globalization

For centuries, globalization followed a simple rhythm; cut a new passage, collapse geography, shrink the world.
When the Suez Canal opened in 1869, Europe and Asia snapped closer overnight; what was once a three-month voyage became three weeks. It wasn’t just engineering; it was empire. Whoever held Suez didn’t just manage shipping lanes; they owned the flow of history.
That script replayed for 150 years; railroads, telegraphs, oil pipelines, container ships, fiber cables, the internet. Every breakthrough sold the same story; borders fade, flows accelerate, the world flattens.
But here’s the inconvenient truth hiding in plain sight; technology is not global; it is territorial.
The New Definition of War
War today is not fought on beaches or borders; it’s fought in switches, sanctions, and standards.
Nayara Energy, an Indian company, fully licensed and fully paid; lost access to Outlook and Teams overnight because of European sanctions tied to Russian ownership; no warning, no appeal; just lights out.
TikTok, with a billion users, can vanish from entire countries with a single signature. A White House memo can decide whether China gets the chips to train its next AI model. And yes; Donald Trump can, with one policy stroke, redraw the map of which technologies move and which stay locked.
This is modern war; not missiles, but blacklists; not armies, but kill switches. Even the titans of tech; the founders who once flaunted defiance; now dine under the chandeliers of Trump-hosted dinners, offering nods and smiles instead of rebellion; the insurgents have learned that survival means courtship, not confrontation. The men who once vowed to “move fast and break things” now move slowly and bow deeply.
Globalization as Franchise
For decades, globalization was a franchise; build in the U.S., stamp it everywhere.
Amazon in Seattle became Amazon in Bangalore; Google in Mountain View became Google in Lagos. Adoption wasn’t negotiated; it was assumed. The world was expected to run on Silicon Valley’s operating system.
That age is collapsing. Nations are drawing digital borders; India pushes ONDC to unseat Amazon; Europe enforces data sovereignty and the Digital Markets Act; China has long fenced its internet; Africa builds fintech stacks tuned to local realities, not imported templates. Globalization isn’t a franchise anymore; it’s a contested bargain.
Germany, for its part, tried to codify sovereignty into software. The push for “digital sovereignty” and projects like Gaia-X were framed as Europe’s chance to claw independence from Silicon Valley’s clouds. At the time, it was met with skepticism; critics called it bureaucracy dressed as strategy, too slow to matter. But Germany’s obsession wasn’t born in a vacuum; it was the long shadow of World War II, a nation permanently allergic to dependency, haunted by the memory of occupation and the costs of lost autonomy. What once looked like over-engineering now reads like foresight; Germany saw that control over data and infrastructure wasn’t an IT debate; it was national security in disguise.
The False Neutrality of Infrastructure
Platforms like to pose as neutral pipes; just like the Suez Canal once claimed to be a free passage for all ships. But neutrality is a convenient myth. In 1956, Egypt nationalized Suez, detonating a geopolitical crisis and proving that “global” infrastructure was always a hostage to politics.
Today, cloud providers, app stores, and payment rails wear the same mask of neutrality; until the mask slips; until a sanction, a policy, or a president reminds you that what you thought was neutral ground is actually occupied territory.
At the time of writing this, Nepal has blocked many of the common global services outright in the name of lack of compliance to local regulations. What looks like sovereignty on paper is playing out as frustration on the streets; Gen Z is protesting in Kathmandu against a digital iron curtain they never asked for. It is a reminder that in smaller states, sovereignty isn’t an abstraction; it is the daily availability or denial of connection.
Resilience Today
Resilience isn’t about building bigger walls; it’s about building escape hatches; the ability to reroute, swap, and recompose when a switch somewhere far away gets flipped.
Startups thrive not because they’re cheaper; but because they’re fluid; modular pieces that survive jurisdictional shocks. Governments insist data stays home; investors quietly price sovereignty into valuations.
The enterprise stack of the future won’t be a single tower; it will be a scattered archipelago, stitched together across hostile waters; not streamlined; not efficient; but unkillable.
A New World
The 2030s won’t bring the end of globalization; nor a tidy return to closed borders; they will bring a fractured, contested world; flows will continue, but through checkpoints that are political, not just physical.
The United States still wields the dollar and the digital kill switch; sanctions, export controls, blacklists; economic levers have become weapons. China builds walls and alternative networks; Russia bets on BRICS to fracture dollar dominance.
India sits at the nexus; neither pawn nor bystander; extract leverage, defend sovereignty, dictate terms. Meta’s entry via Reliance and initiatives like ONDC signal a theme; global giants can play in India; but only on India’s rules. The new map will be jagged; corridors of trade, finance, and data will be contested; blockades will appear; passages will be fragile. Globalization survives; but as a battlefield of leverage, flows, and survival.
India faces a choice. Drift as a follower in the global currents, or seize the chokepoints, flip the switches, and turn vulnerability into leverage. The world will blackout for some; India can light its own path. Strategy, alliances, and sovereignty aren’t optional; they are survival, and mastery of them is the difference between a spectator and an architect of the next era.
